Apply for spring admission to your major

The CSE Admission to the Major database will begin accepting applications for spring semester admission into the major on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Most CSE students apply while enrolled in sophomore-level courses. The deadline to apply is Monday, Dec. 30.
Apply to your major!

The Admission to the Major database will begin accepting applications for spring 2020 admission into a major. If you are eligible, please apply immediately using the steps outlined by the CSE Office of Academic Advising.

To be eligible to apply this semester, you must have:
  • All required coursework successfully completed by the end of the fall 2019 semester
  • At least a 2.0 technical GPA
The required courses to apply to a give major are noted in the lower left-hand corner of your four-year plan four-year-plan and are also marked by diamonds.

The application to the major system recognizes only courses taken at the University of Minnesota, so please make sure any AP or transfer coursework that is required to apply to your major appears on your APAS report. If you have completed classes outside of the University of Minnesota, advisors will need to manually confirm that you have all of the mandatory coursework, and we can only accept your application if all of your courses are accounted for.

The deadline to apply to a major for spring semester admission is Monday, Dec. 30, 2019.

We recommend that you apply to your selected major as soon as possible so we can gain a better understanding of the demand for each program and advise students accordingly.

If you have completed the necessary technical course work for your intended major and have a 3.2 technical GPA at the end of fall semester, you will be guaranteed admission into your major. If your technical GPA is below 3.2, you will be considered for admission on a space-available basis. While 2.0 is the minimum technical GPA to be considered for a major in the College of Science and Engineering, many of our majors have a higher technical GPA cutoff due to limited space.

As a reminder, your technical GPA comprises only courses taken at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The technical GPA is unbracketed, meaning that all attempts at a course (which resulted in a letter grade of A-F) are factored in. To learn more about which classes count toward your technical GPA visit the advising website.

If you have any concerns about your ability to be admitted to your chosen major, please speak with your advisor about your options. If you are not admitted to your first choice major and already have an alternate (parallel) plan in place, your transition into the spring semester will go much more smoothly.

Apply to your major.
