Apply by Friday, Nov. 8 to be a SMART Learning Commons tutor for spring semester

The SMART Learning Commons is accepting student applications for peer tutors. Apply by Friday, Nov. 8 for spring 2020 positions. Tutors are especially needed for high-demand subjects, including math, physics, statistics, chemistry, and computer science.

The SMART Learning Commons is now accepting student applications for 2019-20 peer tutors. The priority application deadline for spring 2020 is Friday, Nov. 8, although applications are also accepted on a rolling basis for future opportunities.

Tutors are especially needed for high-demand subjects, including math (particularly Calculus II and below), physics, statistics, chemistry, computer science, economics, and writing.

Initial pay is $10.50/hr and salary increases with training and experience. Work study eligibility is preferred.

SMART supports more than 250 different courses at the University, and hires for other subjects based on student demand. Competitive applicants are able to support multiple courses/subjects.


To be eligible for consideration, you must:
  • Be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and eligible for student employment
  • Maintain a minimum 3.2 grade point average (GPA) 
  • Have received “A” grade(s) in the course(s) in which you hope to tutor
    • Competency equivalence to an "A" grade through an Advanced Placement (AP) exam, comparable College Level Examination Program (CLEP) score, International Baccalaureate (IB) score or transfer credit also are accepted
    • "A-" grades may be considered, provided SMART receives a faculty endorsement letter for each "A-" course on behalf of the applicant
