Apply to become a 2020 Orientation leader by Wednesday, Oct. 30

The Office of Orientation and Transition Experiences (OTE) is now recruiting students to be 2020 Orientation Leaders. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Are you looking for a way to share your voice on campus and build leadership skills? You can get paid to be one of the main representatives of the University of Minnesota for first-year students! The Office of Orientation and Transition Experiences (OTE) is now recruiting students to be 2020 Orientation Leaders. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019.

Orientation leaders are responsible for transitioning more than 6,000 new students to the University of Minnesota. As an Orientation leader, you will earn $4,000 plus room and board during Freshmen Orientation, May 17-July 10, 2020.

About the position

As part of this valuable internship experience, you will:
  • Develop an understanding of leadership and diversity
  • Lead and facilitate groups of 15-25 students during Orientation
  • Train and supervise a group of 12-20 Welcome Week leaders
  • Develop your leadership style through collaboration, flexibility, and real-life experiences
  • Work in a dynamic, fast-paced, engaging environment

Time commitments include:
  • Winter retreat: Friday, Jan. 24-Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020
  • Spring semester training class every Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Welcome Week Leader Conference: to be determined
  • Residence hall move-in: Sunday, May 17, 2020
  • Summer training: Sunday, May 17-Monday, June 1, 2020; approximately 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily
  • Freshmen orientation: Tuesday, June 2-Friday, July 10, 2020 and Friday, Aug. 21-Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020; approximately 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m. daily
  • Welcome Week training: Friday, Aug. 21-Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020; approximately 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily
  • Welcome Week Leader Prep Week: Friday, Aug. 28-Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2020; approximately 8 am.-8 p.m. daily
  • Welcome Week: Wednesday, Sept. 2-Monday, Sept. 7, 2020; approximately 8 a.m.-midnight daily

Qualifications:


  • Students must be in good academic standing (at or above 2.3 GPA)
  • Students can not graduate before fall 2020
  • Freshmen students are eligible to apply, and must achieve and maintain a 2.3 or higher GPA to remain eligible


  • Application and selection:
    • Apply online at ote.umn.edu/ol
    • Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019
    • Applications will be reviewed and students moving forward will be invited to participate in a group interview. This notification will take place on November 7, 2019 and group interviews will be on November 10 and 12, 2019.
    • Students moving on from the group interview round will be invited to participate in an individual and college interview to take place between November 16-December 10. Students selected for an individual and college interview will be notified on November 15, 2019. 
    • Students selected to be a 2020 Orientation Leader will be notified on December 12, 2019.
