Apply for personal project funding!

Do you have a great idea but need some money to get started? University of Minnesota CSE students can apply to receive up to $500 from the Taylor Student Project Fund to fund a personal project prototype.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis during fall semester, but the sooner you apply, the more likely it is that funds will still be available.

Requirements and qualifications:
  • Applicants must currently be enrolled as undergraduate students in CSE.
  • Applicants may only apply once per semester.
  • Project proposals cannot be related to student group projects, research, or coursework.
  • Projects must use prototyping equipment in the Anderson Student Innovation Labs.
  • Projects must have some educational value or novel aspect for the applicant.
  • Projects must contain some original work. CAD models, code, PCBs, art, music, etc. should all be original designs.
CSE staff and faculty, along with a representative from the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, will review the applications and award funds based on the following criteria:
  • Educational value: Will the applicant learn something from this project? Is the project related to their major?
  • Project scope/viability: How much experience does the applicant have? What is the project end goal and how much is the applicant trying to achieve during this round of funding?
  • Originality: Is the project mostly original work or is the applicant just following an online tutorial?
  • Safety: Is the proposed project safe to work on in university facilities? Is the project end goal safe to operate? Does the applicant have a safety plan for potential hazards?
  • Does the project align with the mission and values of the University of Minnesota?
