TA for CSE 1001!
CSE is looking for students to be teaching assistants (TAs) for the CSE 1001 first-year experience class during fall 2023. These are paid, part-time positions.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must be:
Preferred Qualifications
- University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the College of Science and Engineering
- Registered for a minimum of six credits (excludes Adult Special students) and in good academic standing
- Committed to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Must have a broad knowledge and/or experience with University, college, and peer support services including academic advising, career counseling, student organizations, study abroad, undergraduate research, and more
- Must have strong organizational and communication skills (written and spoken), cross-cultural competency, and a desire to engage in work on Student Development Outcomes both for personal growth and supporting the growth of new first-year students
Preferred candidates will:
- Be undergraduate CSE students who have successfully completed CSE 1001
- Attend College Day activities during Welcome Week, Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023
Job responsibilities:
This position will assist with the course CSE 1001 First Year Experience, which covers resources and strategies for college success including values, time management, student engagement, major exploration, and decision making, appreciation of differences, personal and academic well-being, career and internship preparation, integrity, ethics and professionalism, and more.
TAs are responsible and accountable for assignment grading, one-to-one appointments with students, and other in- and out-of-class duties including leading class presentations and discussions. TAs work independently and interdependently through unsupervised and autonomous work outside of class meetings as well as collaborative work with the course instructor during class meetings. TAs act as a mentor and resource for approximately 40 new first-year students from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities.
Teaching assistants will be scheduled for a minimum of two hours per week—one hour in class and one office hour held jointly with the course instructor. Most TAs reported between two to eight hours on average each week during the fall 2023 semester. Each TA will be assigned to one 50-minute section during fall 2023.
