Now is the time to explore undergraduate research! Participating in research is a great way to gain experience and build your resume. It can also provide opportunities to explore different majors, learn more about graduate or professional school, and expand your network by working with faculty and graduate students.

If you’re interested in an on-campus experience, consider the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). UROP projects can be completed during the fall, spring or summer semesters. The next UROP deadline is March 17, 2025, for summer or fall 2025 projects. Approved projects receive a UROP scholarship stipend of $1,800 for 120 hours of research and up to $300 for project expenses. Learn more about how to apply at z.umn.edu/urop.

Other undergraduate research opportunities include directed research, directed study, and various summer research programs (both on and off campus). To learn more, email ugresearch@umn.edu.

If you need additional support exploring your options, there are numerous resources available:

  • The CSE Undergraduate Research Advocates host drop-in hours in Lind Hall twice a week. No appointments are required. Stop by Tuesdays between 11 a.m. and noon or Wednesdays between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Check in at Lind Hall, Room 105. You can also email them at cseresearch@umn.edu.
  • The Office of Undergraduate Research offers drop-in hours Monday through Friday in Bruininks Hall. For more information, visit the Office of Undergraduate Research Undergraduate staff drop-in hours webpage.
  • University Libraries offer peer support for starting undergraduate research projects, research papers, and research-based class assignments. You can meet with a Peer Research Consultant in person or online. Schedule an appointment on the Peer Research Consultants webpage.
Undergraduate research is a great experience for all students to learn more about their majors, determine if graduate school might be a good fit, and gain valuable resume-building experience.
