Apply to your major!

The CSE Admission to the Major database is now accepting applications for fall semester admission into the major. If you are eligible, please apply immediately using the steps outlined by the CSE Office of Academic Advising.

To be eligible to apply this semester, you must have:
  • All required coursework successfully completed by the end of the spring 2025 semester
  • At least a 2.0 technical GPA
The required courses to apply to a given major are indicated by a diamond on your four-year-plan. Please note that some programs allow for one of two options for certain prerequisites. Please review the “Find out how to apply to your major” section on the four-year plan for program-specific information.

The application to the major system recognizes only courses taken at the University of Minnesota, so please make sure any AP, IB, or transfer coursework that is required to apply to your major appears correctly on your APAS report. If you have completed classes outside of the University of Minnesota, advisors will need to manually confirm that you have all of the required coursework and can only accept your application if all of your courses are accounted for.

The deadline to apply to a major for fall semester admission is Sunday, May 25, 2025.

It is recommend that you apply to your selected major as soon as possible so advisors can gain a better understanding of the demand for each program and advise students accordingly.

Admission to the major decisions at the end of the spring semester are based on space availability, meaning there is no guaranteed technical GPA. While 2.0 is the minimum technical GPA to be considered for a major in the College of Science and Engineering, some of our majors have a cutoff at a higher technical GPA due to limited space.

As a reminder, your technical GPA is comprised only of courses taken at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The technical GPA is unbracketed, meaning that all attempts at a course that resulted in a letter grade of A-F are factored in. To learn more about which classes count toward your technical GPA, visit the advising website.

If you have any concerns about your ability to be admitted to your chosen major, please speak with your advisor about your options. If you currently have an MDR hold on your record, please note that the hold will not be removed until you are admitted into a major.

Apply to your major.
