The Computer Networking, Mobile, and AI Research Lab in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota, led by Professor Zhi-Li Zhang, conducts research on a broad range of topics related to computer and communication networks. The lab’s goal is to help transform the current best-effort internet into a more reliable, available and secure information infrastructure for all types of communication activities.

The lab’s research spans multiple areas, including 5G and NextG networks (performance measurement, analysis and cross-layer design), newly enabled applications (volumetric video streaming, autonomous vehicles), network architecture design and more. Research efforts involve a combination of formal modeling and analysis, experimentation and implementation, and testing and evaluation.

Sign up for a one-hour tour to see two chemical engineering and material science research labs. Please choose either a 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. time slot, or indicate if you are open to either time.

Hackel Research Lab

The Hackel Research Lab uses protein engineering technologies to develop physiological molecular targeting agents for molecular diagnostics and targeted therapy, with a focus on oncology and infectious disease. The lab balances (one) fundamental studies of molecular evolution and protein biophysics, which drive its protein engineering efforts, and (two) the application of these advances to create noninvasive diagnostics and therapeutics for clinical challenges in oncology and infectious disease.

Azarin Research Lab

The Azarin Research Lab studies the regulation of cellular function by healthy and diseased microenvironments. It focuses on cell-cell interactions, drug delivery, and the design of biomaterials for applications in molecular and cellular therapeutics and human disease modeling. Areas of interest include mechanisms of tumor progression, the development of novel treatments for metastatic cancer, molecular transport across physiological barriers, stem cell-derived models of healthy and diseased tissues, and biomanufacturing technologies for emerging cell-based immune therapies. Throughout these efforts, the lab integrates quantitative analysis of biological processes with tissue engineering approaches and novel biomaterial platforms.
